Monthly Craft/Visit/Treat Time
I live close to my kids (hooray!) and want to visit on a regular basis.
Their lives are crazy busy—throwing out a specific time/date usually doesn't work. Also, my condo is super tiny (only about 600 square feet) so it can't comfortably support too many people at once.
I've thought and thought about a way that we could have somewhat-regular, low-key, no-pressure time together that would be enjoyable and fun. Enter ‘Monthly Craft/Visit/Treat Time’!
How ‘Monthly Craft/Visit/Treat Time’ Works
Since I have loads of paper-crafting stuff, I prepare a fun monthly-themed craft that we can do together (only if they want). I write up the instructions for these crafts (see below) for my kids (and the world)! Each month's craft has enough variability that creativity is nourished, but not so many choices that it is overwhelming.
There's always a yummy treat! It might be ingredients-on-hand for a quick made-to-order snack (like nachos). It might be a homemade frozen quick-to-thaw treat (like single-serve lemon squares). My job is to make sure that I've got enough, and that it can last a month.
I send out text/email invitations, inviting people to stop by during the month. Find themselves with some free time? Call to check that I'm here, and come on over! Or, schedule a specific day/time—whatever works best for them. I'm flexible!
People can stay long or short, bring friends, whatever ... it's low-key and easy. Absolutely no pressure and no obligation. Can't make it this month? No problem. But my family gets a regular reminder that I'm always thinking of them and would love to visit if it works out.
