Monthly Crafting Days
I live close to my kids (hooray!) and want to visit on a regular basis.
Their lives are crazy busy—throwing out a specific time/date usually doesn't work. Also, my condo is super tiny (only about 600 square feet) so it can't comfortably support too many people at once.
I've thought and thought about a way that we could have regular, low-key, no-pressure visiting time that would be enjoyable and fun. Enter ‘Monthly Crafting Days’!
How ‘Monthly Crafting Days’ Works
Here's how the ‘Monthly Crafting Days’ works:
- I set a 2–3 day time-frame where I'm guaranteed to be home from about 9AM to 9PM.
- I'll have a yummy homemade treat ready-and-waiting!
- Since I have loads of paper-crafting stuff, I'll have a fun monthly-themed craft planned that we can do together (only if they want).
- I'll write up the instructions for these crafts (see below) for my kids (and everybody)!
My family can drop in anytime during the specified days, without any notice. Stay long or short, bring friends, whatever ... it's low-key and easy! Absolutely no pressure: Can't make it? No problem. But they get a monthly reminder that I'm always thinking of them and would love to visit when it works out!
I tested this concept in February 2025 with ‘Valentine Crafting Days’. It worked great—except that I put out all my paper-crafting stuff, and it was too overwhelming. (I've got a multitude of dies, stamps, inks, construction paper, cardstock, decorative papers/cards, stickers, embossing folders, decorating accessories, pens, embossing powder, gilding wax, more ... Where to look? What to try?)
Moving forward, I decided to make each month's craft more focused. I'll put out a few crafting supplies that are well-suited to the monthly theme: enough choices so creativity can be nourished; not so many as to be overpowering!
