Why called ‘Square Dancing’? four couples arrange themselves in a square

head couples (or just ‘heads’): couple with back to music (#1) and opposite couple (#3)

side couples (or just ‘sides’): remaining two couples (#2 and #4)

• ‘HOME’ has different meaning for ladies/men:
  men—their position in the square at the start of the dance;
  ladies—the home position of the man she is with at the time of the call
• HOME POSITION/HANDHOLDS:
  man on left, woman on right;
  man has right palm up;
  woman rests left palm on top of man's palm
