WRITING AN "IDENTIFICATION" PROGRAM
on the TI-83 CALCULATOR
PURPOSE: To identify the owner of a lost or misplaced calculator!
(And… to give you an introduction to PROGRAMMING on the TI-83.)
Press the PRGM key.
Use the right-arrow key to select NEW .
Press ENTER to select "Create New". This automatically puts you
into "alphabet" mode (notice that the cursor is a flashing "A"). In alphabet mode,
you do not need to press the "alpha" key first to enter letters.
Key in the name IDENT (short for "IDENTification"); and then press
ENTER .
Press 2nd Catalog (above the "0" (zero) key) to get a catalog of programming
instructions; scroll down to ClrHome and press ENTER . This puts the
"Clear Home" instruction as the first line of your program.
Press ENTER to move to the second line of the program.
Press 2nd Catalog to again get a catalog of programming instructions; scroll down
to Disp and press ENTER. This puts the "Display" instruction as the
second line of your program.
Put your name, inside quotation marks, after the Disp command.
(Suggestion: Lock the keyboard in alphabet mode, by pressing 2nd A-LOCK. The
quotation mark is above the "+" key. The "space" (for between first and last names)
is above the zero key.) Be sure to
put both your FIRST and LAST names.
Your program should now look something like this:
PROGRAM: IDENT
:ClrHome
:Disp "Carol JV Fisher"
Press 2nd QUIT (above the MODE key) to end your program.
RUNNING THE "IDENT" PROGRAM:
Press PRGM .
Scroll down to IDENT . (Or, press ALPHA I to jump
to program names that begin with "I" and then find "IDENT".)
Press ENTER . Press ENTER again.
Your name should appear!
