TABLE MANNERS
- Make slips that summarize the table manners that are important to you.
For example, you can print from the pages below, and cut into slips:
Here are slips that we've used for a family lesson. Cut along the lines and fold so the text is hidden.
- Spread out slips on floor; take turns choosing one,
reading it aloud, talking about it.
Why is this manner important? What can happen if this manner isn't followed?
There will be a ‘quiz game’ over this later on, where we'll earn candy, so try to remember everything!
We're going to be practicing at our evening dinners; when we think we're ready,
we'll all go out to a nice restaurant together!
- after about half are done, take a break and watch the videos below
- finish the slips
- QUIZ TIME: go around circle; each person picks a manners slip and a name slip;
asks the person a question; if they get it, put one level spoonful of M&Ms in the bowl; if they miss,
pick another name slip and ask another person (discard if you get your own);
these M&Ms will be divided equally among all of us for a treat/activity in the kitchen in a few minutes!
- Go into kitchen: table is set; each person identifies something that is wrong with their place setting. For example,
Joshua: knife is pointing out, not in
Ray: water and bread plate are in the wrong positions
Bethany: silverware is in wrong position
- Practice serving and eating slowly!
-- one person will ask politely for the M&Ms.
-- they take ONE level spoonful, and then pass in the proper direction around the table
-- last person returns the bowl to the center of the table
-- wait until everyone has M&Ms on their plate before beginning to eat
-- now, we eat ONE M&M at a time with a spoon; rest spoon on plate after putting in mouth;
wait for 5 seconds AFTER swallowing before picking up spoon again
-- Savor the taste! Let it melt in your mouth! Think about how delicious it is! Think about its texture, flavor; focus on your food!
-- after EVERYONE has finished the M&Ms on their plate, repeat!!
